THE YALTA CONFERENCE
Meeting near the end of WWII - big 3 meet to discuss post war Europe
Germany will be divided, controlled by the Allies
Liberated Eastern European countries will have new elections

USSR is given great influence over Eastern Europe, and new government must be "Soviet freindly"

THE BERLIN BLOCKADE AND AIRLIFT
The Soviet surrounded Berlin
The Allies began a massive airlift to supply the city with everything it needed.
The Soviet gave up the blockade after almost a year.
NATO AND THE WARSAW PACT
Two rival "clubs" formed- Nato and the Warsaw Pact
Nato was the U.S./democratic club, the Warsaw PAct was the Soviet/communist club.
NATO still exists today.
NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

THE RED SCARE, THE ROSENBERGS, AND HUAC
People in the U.S. became very afraid of the communists.
They tried to convict some communists in court.
COMMUNISM IN CHINA
Communism spread to China with the victory of Mao Ze Dong.
The U.S. policy of containment failed to stop the spread of communism.
China is still communist today.

first in space, such as first man in space, first complete orbit
of the earth, first man on the moon, etc.
Started in 1958.
The Soviets had a head start with Sputnik, and they caught
the U.S. unawares.
